New Park, New Restaurant: The Grove at Discovery Green

The Grove is one of two new restaurants located inside Houston’s new eco-friendly park, Discovery Green. The eatery is located on the south side of the park, across the street from the Hilton Americas Hotel in downtown Houston.

Executive Chef Ryan Pera, who most recently worked at Alden Hotel’s 17, created the American Rustic menu featuring rotisserie specials, steak and seafood with famed Chef Robert Del Grande.

The eatery also features an open-air deck called the Treehouse, which the operators hope will become the go-to downtown spot for drinks and appetizers.

Eat a Burger in Support of Houston AIDS Project

The Little Bitty Burger Barn, located at 5503 Pinemont Drive in northwest Houston, invites Houston to take part in the annual worldwide “Dine Out For Life” event.

Springsteen Tickets Up For Grabs in Online Auction

An online auction for two sets of tickets, including backstage access, to the April 14 Bruce Springsteen Concert at Houston’s Toyota Center benfits the Houston Food Bank.

The tickets are being sold on eBay and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Houston Food Bank. Payment will go directly to the Food Bank through PayPal. Every dollar donated to the Houston Food Bank feeds a family of four.

Two concert packs are being auctioned off. Each pack includes two loge-level concert tickets (located in the first tier above floor level) and two passes to the backstage E Street Lounge before the concert.

Say Bon Voyage to Hunger on May 4

The 20th Annual SOS Taste of the Nation Houston ~ Bon Voyage to Hunger event is a culinary extravaganza featuring food and wine from more than 50 of Houston’s finest restaurants and chefs.

Spend a gala afternoon on Sunday, May 4 between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. strolling, sampling, sipping and socializing with fellow Houstonians on the lovely Meadow at The Houstonian Hotel Club & Spa., located at 111 N. Post Oak Lane.

The Static Band from Lake Charles, La., will perform and an extensive silent auction will be held.

Tickets to the event, which will feature a nautical theme, range between $100 per passenger and $200 per sailor. Sponsorship tables of 10 are also available.

100 percent of all tickets sales will benefit local, state, national and international organziations helping to fight hunger. 70 percent of the proceeds will be divided equally between the Houston Food Bank and The End Hunger Network.

Empty Bowls HoustonWhole Foods Market – Houston will host a Community Giving Day Wednesday, April 9 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. to raise money for the Houston Food Bank’s Empty Bowls program

Whole Foods Market will donate 5 percent of the day’s sales from all five Houston-area locations to the Houston Food Bank. Empty Bowls brings together local artists and craftspeople to help fight hunger across the Houston area.

Between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, Empty Bowls committee members and local artists will demonstrate their crafts at the stores and sell teicktes to the 4th annual Empty Bowls Houston event to be held Saturday, May 17.

Zonta Zelebration: Best of Houston Chefs Charity Event

Taste some of the best of Houston food at the 2008 Zonta Zelebration, formerly known as the Glass Sipper Ball.

Some of Houston’s best chefs will prepare signature dishes during the April 19 event at the Edwin Hornberger Conference Center in the Texas Medical Center.

For $85, individuals can sample food from 20 of Houston’s best restaurants, take part in a charity auction and hear the music of the Nite Beat Band.

Proceeds from the event benefit the following organizations:

  • Bay Area Turning Point
  • Casa de Esperanza de los Ninos
  • Ten Thousand Villages
  • The Houston Rescue and Restore Coalition
  • Zonta International Foundation, dedicated to advancing the status of women world-wide
  • Local and international scholarships for women

Eat Sushi for a Good Cause in April

Head over to RA Sushi, located at 3908 Westheimer Road near Greenway Plaza, throughout the month of April and order “The Sunshine Roll.”

Several local nonprofit organizations created and submitted original sushi roll recipes made by the chefs at RA on April 1. A panel of celebrity judges, including FOX 26 Morning News Anchor Jose Grinan, judged the creative and tasty rolls, and chose “The Sunshine Roll” as the winner.

Part of the proceeds brought in by customers who bought this roll will benefit “The Sunshine Kids Foundation,” which provides positive group activities and emotional support for young cancer patients.

Decadent Chocolate Sauce

As a memorial to her father, Caroline Rhea shares his favorite chocolate sauce recipe. A closely kept secret for decades, this decadent and dark chocolaty delight topped ice cream and many an evening with family and friends in the Rhea household. Use wisely. Not all meals will be special enough for David Rhea’s recipe. But when the occasion warrants, he’ll be there with you to indulge.

Ingredients:

  • 2 squares of unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/3 cup white sugar
  • 1/3 cup water

Preparation:

  1. Melt 2 squares of unsweetened chocolate and 1 tablespoon of butter in a double boiler.
  2. Add 1/3 cup white sugar to the mix and stir.
  3. Add 1/3 cup boiling water, continue stirring until sauce thickens.
