Young Chefs Prepare Mother’s Day Meals

Ham and Cheese Strata Breakfast Dish
8 Servings

Ingredients
12 slices white bread, crusts removed and cubed
1 pound cooked ham, diced
2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
6 eggs
3 cups milk
2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp. ground mustard
½ tsp. salt
¼ tsp. pepper
¼ cup onion, finely chopped
¼ cup green pepper, finely chopped
¼ cup butter, melted
1 cup crushed cornflakes

Equipment
Measuring cups and spoons
Knife
Bowl
Whisk
9×13 baking dish
Cooking spray

Directions

  1. Arrange ½ of bread cubes in the bottom of greased baking dish.
  2. Top with ham and cheese.
  3. Cover with remaining bread cubes.
  4. In a bowl, beat eggs, milk, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper.
  5. Stir in onion and green pepper.
  6. Pour over bread.
  7. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour.
  8. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  9. Stir crushed cornflakes into melted butter and spread evenly on top.
  10. Bake uncovered for 45-55 minutes or until knife inserted in the middle comes out clean.
  11. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. Makes 8 servings.

Easy Fudgy Bonbons Dessert
Makes 24 bonbons

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. (12 oz.) semisweet chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 14 oz. sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • Candy kisses, unwrapped (one for each bonbon)
  • Powdered sugar, to garnish

Equipment

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Large microwave-safe bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Cookie sheet
  • Hand-held sifter
  • Spoon

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Heat the chocolate chips and butter in a large microwave-safe bowl in the microwave.
  3. Occasionally stirring until melted.
  4. Add sweetened condensed milk and stir.
  5. Stir in flour and vanilla to this mixture to make the dough.
  6. Shape 1 level teaspoon of dough around each candy kiss, enclosing completely.
  7. Arrange one inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet
  8. Bake for 6-8 minutes. The cookies will look soft and shiny, but will become firm as they cool.
  9. Transfer to wire racks to cool; dust with powdered sugar for decoration.

NOTE: Hershey’s Kisses were invented in 1907, and get their name from the “kissing” sound made by the machines when making the candy!
